FROM THE GM

Course Superintendent Announcement Coming Soon

Whilst not currently able to announce the name of our successful applicant, I’m delighted to announce that our preferred candidate from the interview process has accepted the position of course superintendent, and visa application process is underway to bring him and his family over from the UK.

Having spent some time here within the last week looking at the club, course, meeting some of the team, we feel that we have found someone who will fit in well and sees the potential of North Shore Golf Club.  Whilst it is nice to be able to make this announcement, we also need to recognise the work of Lee Horton and his team during this ongoing interim period. We are close to filling the two other vacant green keepers positions and look forward to being back up to a full complement of staff in the coming weeks and months.

Course Conditions

With winter now here we are once again seeing our course struggling to cope with the levels of water that is coming our way. I’m always amazed at how quickly we transition from ‘running out of water’ to ‘saturated’ and this year has been no different. We had a relatively dry start to the year with low rainfall and a dry course.

At this point the lake was nearly empty, bores were working hard to top up the levels, however we spend around $50k on supplementary water from the town supply. The good news is that we had a 100mm rain event that effectively topped up the lake to capacity.

We have a great catchment, and this does bode well for the future. What we now must do is to consider ways that we can store more water on the course for when we need it, to negate the need to ‘buy in’ water. It’s also worth remembering that accessing council water may not always be possible. At times of drought and when restrictions are in place we will not be a priority.

A further consideration in terms of water is the future grass types we want on the course, effectiveness of the drainage etc. All of these things have knock on effects, better drainage will mean a greater requirement for water in the summer months (depending on the grass types).

Having spent a significant amount on drainage (both traditional and hydrowicking) in the past couple of years to address some of the wettest areas of the course, it would be irresponsible not to assess the effectiveness of this spend, and whether it provides a good return on investment.

My current take on this is that I have my doubts about this approach. Ultimately, we are putting drainage into very poor soils, and whilst this might buy us some extra time on the course and hopefully aid recovery, ultimately it is unable to deliver what we all want which is a relatively dry course throughout the year.

Whilst Sand capping seems to have become a no go for some after the proposals last year, I’m increasingly convinced that this what is required to get us back to where we need to be. This doesn’t necessarily have to come with the more dramatic changes to the course layout that were proposed last year, or with the same levels of disruption, however if we want to see significant improvements, we need to address the key issues.

Members in recent weeks have once again expressed their frustration at course closures and restrictions on carts. Implementing these restrictions is not done without much debate and consideration of the impacts on members, staff, income streams and damage to the course.

Having taken the decision to stay open following prolonged rainfall throughout the week, I was then contacted by a number of members saying that we should have been closed and that the course was too wet. From my perspective, allowing people to see and experience the wet course is not a bad thing. It’s easy to forget the underfoot conditions when looking out of the window and seeing blue skies - a beautiful day for golf!

The below table highlights the monthly rainfall on the course since 2015 which makes for interesting reading:

COURSE CORNER

I think it is fair to say that winter is well and truly here. At the time of writing this, we have had some kind of rain for the last 22 days. Some of these days have seen some big numbers as well. Not a fun time for you golfers but believe me it’s even less fun for us green keepers. We take pride in what we do and when we can’t get out there to do our job it gets very frustrating. This frustration deepens when we see golfers not following the guidelines we set out for the course each day. Seeing a golf cart stuck on the middle of the 1st fairway the other week with four golfers trying to push it off was not ideal. We have settings for a reason with yours and our staffs safety a priority alongside trying to minimise damage on the course. Below is a bit of a snapshot of what we’ve been having to deal with over the last few weeks.

As you can see, we’ve had some challenges out there over the last few weeks. The predicted winter forecast of milder, wetter conditions does not bode well for the next few months. The majority of our membership know that this is how it goes through the winter so there should be no surprises out there for everybody.

Our team have been out trying to rope off some of the worst spots on our fairways just to try and save more damage. This had to be done as we were getting a lot of damage from the motorised trundlers going through these wet spots. These heavy trundlers can make quite a lot of mess if they are not managed properly.

We’ve probably put well over a kilometre of rope out on the course at present. This is a never ending job that ultimately becomes an issue for us when we can get machines out to cut areas. We then have all the rope to move first then we have to put it back out once finished. This is what this time of year brings so we just have to get on with it.

We managed to get the tree contractors back over the last few weeks to grind out the stumps of the trees they cut down. This was done without causing too much damage and we now just have to clean them out and fill them in with some soil/sand/clay.

We had a couple of the team go out and try to fix up the overflow that runs between the 20th and 26th holes. You’d have seen in one of the above photos the waterfall that was running down the side of the 20th bank.

When we went up to investigate, part of the wall had washed away and this area was sitting a bit lower. We’ve raised this area up now with the aid of some sand bags and waratahs.

Hopefully this will stop this happening again. One thing is sure though, it won’t be long before we find out.

That’s it from me. If any of you are brave enough to come and play, please be careful getting around the course. Be under no illusions that it isn’t great at the moment and we are a few months away from the course getting to a more playable state. This has been the case and will continue to be the case year on year until some major works are done.

As always, the ball is in your court and if this is acceptable year on year, this is what you have to look forward to year on year.

Cheers

Lee

Golf Club Etiquette

This is just to serve as a little reminder to all members of what is expected of you at NSGC.

Cancel your tee booking if you are unable to come to golf, as soon as you know you can’t play. This is equally important on busy, quiet and wet days. The team can then group individuals left in the tee sheet with other players. If any member makes a habit of not cancelling and not showing up to play, they will incur fines and/or loss of booking rights.

Keep up with the group in front. If you lose ground on them, please play ready golf and do whatever you can to catch up to them. If you cannot catch up, let the group behind you play through.

Look after your course – keep out of wet areas, keep trundlers within arm’s reach and park them to the side of the green in the direction of the next tee, repair divots & pitch marks, rake bunkers. Everyone needs to do their part to help keep the course in the best condition possible, members not complying with these requirements will be asked to return to the clubhouse.

Don’t be afraid to politely remind other players to do these things. If someone else reminds you, please take the comment with good humour. We are all in this together.

Etiquette Poem - Author Unknown

Be ready on the first and stand

With ball on tee and club in hand

On each tee saving time is not hard

Drive off first, then mark your card

Walk quickly to the ball in play

Think club selection on the way

Keep up with players in front of you

To lose a hole is real taboo

Don’t leave buggies in the way

Or those behind must wait to play

One practise swing is fine to take

But don’t do 10, for goodness sake!

Lost your ball? Not a clue?

Players behind you must call through

In stableford if you can’t score

Pick up your ball and putt no more

And if a slow-coach you must stay

Then please play last in the day.

Transform Your Bathroom: Smart Renovation Tips for Any Size Space.

A bathroom renovation can be one of the most rewarding updates you make to your home. Whether you're working with a compact ensuite or a tired family bathroom, smart design decisions can dramatically improve how the space looks, feels, and functions. If you're based in North Shore and thinking about renovating, here are some practical tips to help you make the most of your bathroom – no matter the size:

Start with Smart Space Planning Good layout is the foundation of a successful bathroom. In smaller spaces, wall-hung vanities, floating toilets, and frameless glass showers help open up the room. A large mirror and well-placed lighting can also make the space feel more expansive.

Think Beyond Basic Storage A clutter-free bathroom feels instantly more relaxing. Recessed shelves in the shower, mirrored cabinets above the vanity, and custom drawers with built-in organisers are all great ways to maximise storage without overcrowding the space.

Use Light and Colour to Your Advantage Soft, neutral tones like warm white, taupe, or sage green create a calm atmosphere and help reflect light. Glossy tiles, satin finishes, and layered lighting – such as sconces paired with LED strip lights – can add both brightness and style.

Choose Timeless, Durable Materials Skip the fads and opt for finishes that will stand the test of time. Porcelain tiles, brushed tap ware, and engineered stone bench tops are not only long-lasting but easy to maintain. Pairing these with timber accents or textured stone can add warmth and personality.

Add Comfort and Convenience Features like underfloor heating, soft-close drawers, and heated towel ladders elevate the everyday experience. Don’t forget water efficiency – modern fittings can be both stylish and eco-friendly.

If you’re in North Shore and thinking about your dream bathroom, let’s bring those ideas to life. We're here to help you plan a space that’s as practical as it is beautiful—just reach out when you’re ready to begin.

Warm regards,

Sarah & Jeremy Lowe
